AS/A Level French

The Pearson Edexcel AS and A Level in French has been developed to inspire and to appeal to all students who have an appreciation of the language, film and culture of the French-speaking world. The course aims to provide students with every opportunity to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills learnt for GCSE. This specification will help prepare students for higher education and enhance their employability profile.

AS French

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation (*Paper code 8FRO/01) 40% of the qualification.
Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes.

Paper 2: Written response to works and translation (*Paper code 8FRO/02) 30 % of the qualification.
Written examination: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Paper 3: Speaking (*Paper code 8FRO/03) 30% of the qualification.
Internally conducted and externally assessed. Total time: 27- 30 minutes, including a single period of 15 minutes formal preparation time.

A Level French

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in French consists of two externally examined papers assessing listening, reading and writing.

The speaking assessment is externally set and conducted by a teacher/ examiner*. All assessments are marked by Pearson. Students must complete their speaking assessment in May/June in any single year.

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation (*Paper code 9FRO/01) 40% of the qualification.
Written examination: 2 hours.

Paper 2: Written response to works and translation (*Paper code 9FRO/02) 30% of the qualification.

Written examination: 2 hours.

Paper 3: Speaking (*Paper code 9FRO/03) 30% of the qualification.

Internally conducted and externally assessed. Total time: Between 21 and 23 minutes, which includes a single period of 5 minutes formal preparation time.
